The word "symbiosis" comes from the Greek words "syn" (together) and "biosis" (living), and describes the close relationship between two or more different species.
Symbiotic relationships can take many forms, from mutualistic (both species benefit), to commensalistic (one species benefits, the other is unaffected), to parasitic (one species benefits, the other is harmed).
The term "symbiota" refers to the entire community of organisms involved in a given symbiotic relationship.
